As the election season comes to a close, it is appropriate to reflect upon the values we hold dear and begin to once again think about the people we elect to represent us. What are the candidates’ positions on the issues? Should an incumbent be reelected or should someone new be entrusted to make the tough decisions? What is the platform of each of the two major parties? Are the country, the Commonwealth, and the County headed in the right direction?
We need a system of checks and balances, but we don’t have that now. The White House, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Governor’s Mansion and the Kentucky House are all controlled by liberals – and it is no secret where that has led us. Job loss, reckless spending, unsustainable debt, government run health care, and an economy that refuses to pick up is directly attributable to the tax, borrow, and spend policies of Washington and Frankfort. We must get back to basic conservative principles or we will be forced to live with the consequences of our inaction.
Regardless of your political affiliation, you need to know how the major parties stand on issues. This is important because each major party candidate is required by law to declare that he or she intends to support the party’s principles and policies. Thus, if one files as a Democrat for the State House, that person declares support for government intrusion into every phase of our lives, while a person filing as a Republican declares support for the conservative principles of smaller, less intrusive government. A Democrat declares support for one size fits all health care, and a person running as a Republican declares support for the right of every Kentuckian to choose her or his health care plan.
Check out an incumbent’s record. Is that record one that you support? If you aren’t happy that your current State Representative voted to raise taxes by over $300 Million this year, vote for the challenger. If you aren’t happy that your current State Representative voted to put Kentucky into an additional $1.2 Billion worth of debt, vote for the fresh face. If you aren’t happy that your current State Representative voted to eliminate a business tax deduction at a time when we need more business in our area, vote for the new guy.
Common sense dictates that if income goes down, spending must go down too. Tough times require touch choices. Raising taxes, borrowing money, and repealing tax deductions are no way to run a state. Kentucky’s debt is over 32% of the Commonwealth's economic output. This is 18% higher than New York and 28% higher than California - two states facing bankruptcy. This foolishness can’t continue!
This is a crucial time in our history, and shrugging our shoulders, shaking our heads, and muttering about how bad things are won’t change a thing. We must take action, and that action can’t be voting for the same folks who got us into this mess. We can no longer afford to simply vote a straight Democrat ticket because daddy did or because that’s the way we’ve always voted. Sadly, there are no longer any conservative Democrats in Frankfort; they’ve gone the way of the dinosaur.
I am the new guy, the fresh face, the challenger. I will work to uphold and defend the principles of Government constraint, empowering people, and spending only what is necessary. If we unleash the power of enterprise, innovation, civic energy, the American spirit, and never pretend that government is a substitute for family or community, we can get back on the path to a prosperous future.
